Breakthrough - Excerpts that I found interesting and helpful

In addition to reading some more scripture this week, I also started reading “Breakthrough” (originally titled “The Impossible”).  I had seen the movie sometime last year but ordered the book earlier this summer when I was struggling with positive thinking regarding this pregnancy.  I thought if this lady had faith strong enough to believe her son could survive this drowning, perhaps I needed to look into her words and see what I could learn from her.

There were a lot of passages that I marked to share in this blog.  I started the book yesterday morning while I was waiting for my kiddo to take his MAP testing at school and finished it around lunch time today.  It brought me some serious perspective, in addition to the bold statements that I read and wanted to share.

The following passages are from the book “Breakthrough” by Joyce Smith and Ginger Kolbaba.

“Here’s what I’ve learned about prayer.  Desperate prayer isn’t a one-off kind of thing.  Jesus talked about it in this way:  “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matt. 7:7).  But what many of us fail to understand is that when we pray, we entered a spiritual battlefield.  Jesus wasn’t telling us simply to pray once and then He’d answer.  He was saying thing:  Ask—and keep on asking; seek—and keep on seeking; knock—and keep on knocking.”

“One thing I know about prayer.  We can never pray too much.  We can never wear down or annoy God with our requests.  We can never outpray our welcome with God.”

“Don’t buy into fear.  You can’t have faith if you’re buying into fear.  When we give fear a place in our hearts and minds, it opens the door for the enemy to attack us.”

“When the enemy tries to come after you with false evidence, ask God what the truth is.  You can be honest with God.  He understands fear.  But He wants you to exchange fear with faith.  Tell God how you’re feeling, and then right away go back to the promises that God gave in His Word.”

“Don’t let you mind wander.  When those fearful and lying thoughts come, don’t give them any space to take hold and grow.”

“Even in the midst of the chaos and craziness, even when it looks as though God isn’t working or answering our prayers, even when it seems as if all hope is gone, God shows up and does something spectacular, reminding us that He is always working.  He never sleeps, He never forgets, He never lets a single moment go to waste.”

I enjoyed reading this book and it gave me some new ideas of how to refocus myself towards God and his promises.  If I let the negative what-ifs live in my head, I’m not focusing on God and giving it all over to him.  Something I’m working on, for sure.
